Progression NOT Perfection!
Did you make a goal for yourself, family or business at the beginning of the year but you’re not where you thought you’d be at this point? You are not alone! Believe me when I tell you that if everyone could accomplish their goals in the amount of time that they gave them this world would be different. I am here to remind you that no one or no one thing is perfect, even our planned goals. Your mindset for your goals as they say in football is to “move the chains”, so you are in reach of scoring a touchdown, which in the end is your goal that you have set.
Many people don’t like to set goals because they are afraid of not achieving them. The reality is you are guaranteed failure if you don’t even try. I will repeat loud “GUARANTEED FAILURE!” How do you know you will be able to achieve the goal? You don’t. How do you know you will fail at the goal? You do, if you don’t start. So many times we bet on other things and people but we don’t bet on ourselves! Why is that?
Another reason people don’t set the goals is because they are waiting for Perfection to come knocking down their door. PSA: Perfection isn’t coming! If were or are looking for it you may be missing out on the “perfect” opportunity. Les Brown says it best “The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.” Recently, I had the chance to help an author publish his first book in print. He had been expressing that he wanted to do this for four years but never completed it. Well not on my watch!
Other times people set their goals but they are not consistent with working on the tasks they need to achieve the goal. Let me reintroduce to you Consistency the Queen. Being consistent I will admit can be a challenge and get mundane but you have to keep our eyes on the bigger prize, whatever that may be for yourself, family or business.
Sometimes it may feel like you are moving at the speed of Tony/Toni the turtle but some progress is better than none. Enjoy this time of slow movement because when things get in motion and you are reaching benchmark after benchmark, setting new goals faster than you can imagine you won’t have this time. Your movement will have transformed from Tony/Toni the turtle to Tony/Toni the tiger/tigress.
No matter what speed you are going and for different goals it may vary keep an eye on them. Count your small wins! Research shows that when people are trying to lose weight more people were more successful by weighing themselves often. So “weigh in” weekly it will help you with seeing your progression. Strive for progression not perfection and Move the Chains!
